The Astronomy and Astrophysics Group (GAA) has been bringing researchers from the Department of Physics of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) together since it was set up in 1995. It currently has five faculty members, one Ramon y Cajal fellow and seven PhD students.
The research interests of the GAA cover a wide spectrum of areas in astronomy and astrophysics, mostly in stellar structure and evolution, including:
Evolution of AGB and super-AGB stars, cooling of white dwarf stars, type Ia supernovae: hydrodynamics and nucleosynthesis, classical nova explosions: hydrodynamics and nucleosynthesis, observations, type I X-ray bursts: hydrodynamics and nucleosynthesis, X-ray observations, stellar mergers, inertial confinement fusion: hydrodynamic simulations, space missions: ground segment and payload.

The GAA is located in two UPC schools, the Barcelona East School of Engineering (EEBE) and the Castelldefels School of Telecommunications and Aerospace Engineering (EETAC).
