The Process and Environment Engineering Centre (CEPIMA) carries out research and development on the study, simulation and optimisation of chemical processes and sustainability. The aim of its work is to bring about improvements in the design and management of production systems that increase the efficiency of processes and the use of resources and minimise environmental impact.
The CEPIMA is currently working on the following:
- Process integration and intensification: optimal design and operation following multiple-goal criteria (productivity, safety, logistics, financial management, environmental impact, reliability, customer service, etc.). The CEPIMA also develops intelligent decision support systems (DSS) for real-time online operations (management and coordination of production resources, production planning, process supervision and control, fault detection and diagnosis, uncertainty forecasting and management, etc.).
- Waste management and recovery: management and recovery of biomass, tyres, solid urban waste, sludge from water treatment plants, etc., using thermal and energy recovery processes that allow for environmental control (combustion, gasification/co-gasification and pyrolysis).
