The Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology Group (GBMI) carries out research on biological molecules, particularly proteins that have applications in biomedicine and biotechnology. It is a multidisciplinary group that includes chemists, biologists and chemical engineers and is made up of senior researchers and research grantholders.

The group’s activity focuses on two lines: basic research that includes molecular studies (designing and obtaining recombinant proteins by means of genetic engineering techniques) and applied research that aims to develop new materials and processes (modifying enzymes for industrial applications to improve processes and modifying polymers to obtain high added value systems).

The Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology Group has worked on a number of Spanish and European research projects and frequently collaborates with industry. Its research lines are the study of the structure and properties of membrane receptor proteins, enzymatic catalysis for natural and synthetic fibres and the study and identification of dye molecules and their properties.
