The Industrial and Advanced Polymers and Technological Biopolymers Research Group (POL) of the Department of Chemical Engineering develops materials that have advanced technical properties for new applications.

The Industrial and Advanced Polymers and Technological Biopolymers Research Group (POL) works on three research and development lines, all of which involve the development of materials that have advanced technical properties for new applications, including the synthesis and biosynthesis of polymers, their chemical and structural characterisation, and the evaluation of their thermal and mechanical properties, permeability and degradability. The three research lines are as follows:

  • Industrial polymers, principally aromatic polyesters (PET and PBT), polyurethanes and polyamides. Work is currently being carried out on optimising industrial polymerisation processes and developing new copolymers that have enhanced environmental and technological properties.
  • Biodegradable polymers synthesised from natural products, amino acids and carbohydrates. Polyamides, polyesters, polyester amides, polycarbonates and polyurethanes are prepared using readily available sugar derivatives and their biodegradability is then evaluated.

  • Polymers produced by biosynthesis, bacteria and fungi, specifically polyglutamic and polymalic acids. These biopolymers are then modified for use in biomedical applications such as membranes or drug delivery systems.
