The Analysis of Cultural Heritage Materials Research Group (AMPC) focuses on the study of heritage materials of historic, archaeological, artistic and cultural interest using chemical analysis techniques and large-scale scientific facilities. Once the composition of materials has been determined, the chemical mechanisms involved in the processes of ageing and alteration can be explained, and this is of fundamental interest in the fields of conservation and restoration. Information on production techniques, geographic origin, trade, etc. can also be obtained.

A further area of research is reproducing antique materials not just to understand the way in which they were produced, but also to produce reference materials. The group also performs laboratory studies to reproduce ageing and reaction processes.

The interest of the research lies in adapting techniques to the problems that arise and optimising analytical methods, and in the use of results in other fields of knowledge.
